How it works

ACA marketplace basics before you apply

The marketplace helps eligible residents compare individual and family health plans, estimate savings, and enroll in coverage.

Start with your state

Your state determines whether you enroll through HealthCare.gov or a state-run marketplace. That is why My State Exchange starts with your resident state.

Estimate total cost, not just premium

Monthly premium matters, but deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, copays, network access, and prescription coverage can change the real yearly cost.

Ask about supplemental benefits

Dental, vision, accident, hospital indemnity, and critical illness products can be separate from ACA medical plans. They are not a replacement for major medical coverage, but they may be worth discussing when reviewing household risk and budget.

Ask before you lock it in

Plan names and networks can look similar. Talking through your situation first can help you avoid common comparison mistakes.
